Washington, DC (November 14, 2019) – Subject Matter today announced that Capitol Hill veteran Bill Ghent will join the Government Relations team beginning November 18th. Bill has more than 25 years of experience on Capitol Hill and in journalism. He joins the firm from The Lugar-Hellmann Group, where he represented Fortune 500 companies and trade associations on trade, tax, technology, and health care issues. Prior to this, Bill served as Sen. Tom Carper’s (D-Del.) Chief of Staff and senior policy and communications aide.
“The legislative and regulatory landscape is uncertain with divided government and we’re thrilled to welcome Bill Ghent and his vast Hill experience to our bipartisan Government Relations team,” said Subject Matter partner Jimmy Ryan. “During his time on the Hill, Bill had a hand in shaping some of the leading policy issues of the day – including health care and Wall Street reform – by working across party lines to find consensus.”
Sen. Carper promoted Bill to Chief of Staff from Legislative Director, where he had a hand in shaping the Affordable Care Act, Dodd-Frank and credit card reform, and climate change legislation. Bill also started the Moderate Democratic Working Group in the Senate, which coordinated policy and legislative strategy among offices, and served as the Democratic head of the Bipartisan Legislative Directors network. Before his policy work, Bill was the Senator’s Communications Director, building upon nearly a decade of experience as a Hill reporter for leading publications like the National Journal, the predecessor to what became Energy and Environment Daily, and an online congressional news company owned by the Washington Post.
“Bill has a unique blend of policy, communications, and government relations experience that’ll make him an invaluable advocate for our clients,” said Subject Matter partner Steve Elmendorf. “Subject Matter stands apart from our competitors because we successfully provide a full-suite of advocacy services – from creative ad campaigns, to strategic communications, and government relations – that empower our clients with the solutions they need to win. Bill’s breadth of experience will help Subject Matter continue to deliver important victories for our clients.”
